Genting Highlands and SkyWorlds in the mountains of Malaysia

Why Genting Highlands is worth the trip

Genting Highlands sits at around 1,740 metres above sea level, on the border between Selangor and Pahang. It is one of Malaysia's best-known highland resorts and is around an hour from Kuala Lumpur when traffic is moving normally.

The resort combines theme-park attractions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, entertainment and mountain scenery in one destination. For many visitors, the main attractions are Genting SkyWorlds, Awana SkyWay, Chin Swee Caves Temple and the resort's shopping and dining areas.

The mountain road is part of the journey — give yourself enough time and do not underestimate weekend traffic.

Where is Genting Highlands?

Genting Highlands is about 50 km north-east of Kuala Lumpur. The usual route follows the Karak Highway before climbing through the winding mountain road towards the resort.

The main resort area is Resorts World Genting, where you will find SkyAvenue, Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, hotels, restaurants, entertainment and other attractions.

How long does it take to get to Genting Highlands?

From central Kuala Lumpur, allow around 60 to 90 minutes in normal traffic. From KLIA or KLIA2, a practical planning estimate is around 90 to 120 minutes.

These are planning estimates rather than guaranteed journey times. Traffic on the highway and the mountain approach can change significantly during weekends, school holidays, public holidays and festive periods.

If you have a theme-park booking, hotel check-in or flight connection to catch, leave additional time rather than planning around the shortest possible journey.

What time should you leave for Genting Highlands?

For a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, a morning departure is usually the most practical choice. A pickup around 9:00–10:00 AM gives you time to travel up the mountain without starting the day too late.

If you are visiting Genting SkyWorlds, arriving earlier can also give you more time at the park. During weekends and school holidays, queues and traffic can make the day longer than expected.

Plan your return before you go up. Genting can become busy later in the day. If you are using a private transfer, agree on your return pickup location and time in advance rather than deciding at the last minute.

How to get to Genting Highlands: your options

1. Private chauffeur transfer

A private transfer is convenient if you are travelling with family, luggage, elderly passengers or a group. Your driver can collect you from your hotel or airport and take you directly to your chosen destination at Genting Highlands.

It can also simplify the return journey because your pickup is arranged in advance rather than depending on finding a ride after a busy day.

If you are considering a private transfer, you can request a quote here .

2. Self-drive

Driving yourself gives you flexibility, but the final part of the journey is a winding mountain road. If you are unfamiliar with the route, allow extra time and be prepared for rain, mist and reduced visibility.

  • Expect winding sections as you climb towards the resort.
  • Traffic can become heavy during weekends and holidays.
  • Toll charges apply on the highway route.
  • Allow additional time for parking and walking to your destination.

3. Bus or coach

Buses and coaches are available from Kuala Lumpur and other locations. They can be an economical option, especially for travellers who do not mind following a fixed departure schedule.

The main disadvantage is flexibility. You are travelling according to the operator's schedule and may still need to make your way from the terminal to your hotel or attraction.

4. Taxi or e-hailing

Taxi and e-hailing services can be useful for one-way trips, but availability and pricing can vary during busy periods. For the return journey, especially after a long day at the resort, it is worth arranging your transport in advance.

Things to do at Genting Highlands

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park

Genting SkyWorlds is the resort's main outdoor theme park, with themed areas, rides and entertainment. If the park is one of the main reasons for your visit, allow several hours rather than trying to combine too many other attractions into the same afternoon.

Attraction availability, operating arrangements, ticketing and other park details can change. Check the official Genting SkyWorlds information before your visit.

Awana SkyWay also provides access to Chin Swee Station, allowing visitors to stop at Chin Swee Caves Temple before continuing their journey.

Operating hours, maintenance schedules and service arrangements can change, so check the official Resorts World Genting website before travelling.

Which vehicle makes sense for Genting Highlands?

The best vehicle depends on the number of passengers and, just as importantly, the amount of luggage you are carrying.

For smaller groups travelling light, a Compact MPV / SUV such as the Perodua Alza is generally suitable for up to four passengers.

For families and groups wanting more space, an Executive MPV such as a Toyota Alphard or Vellfire provides a more comfortable option for up to six passengers.

For larger groups with more luggage, the Premium Executive Van option, such as a Toyota Hiace with Pilot Seat, provides additional seating and luggage capacity.

An XL MPV such as a Hyundai Staria or Grand Starex can accommodate larger groups, while an Excursion 14-Seater Van is suitable for groups of around 10–14 passengers.

You can see the available vehicle options and request a quote on the Genting Highlands booking page .

Coming from KLIA?

If Genting Highlands is one of your first stops after arriving in Malaysia, travelling directly from KLIA can be practical, especially if you are already planning to stay overnight at the resort.

From KLIA, allow around 90–120 minutes as a general planning estimate. Traffic can make the journey longer, particularly around weekends and public holidays.

If you are arriving on an international flight, do not schedule your Genting arrival too tightly. Allow enough time for immigration, baggage collection and any flight delays before starting the road journey.

If you are staying in Kuala Lumpur first, you can also arrange a separate airport transfer to your hotel and travel from Kuala Lumpur to Genting on another day.

Parking at Genting Highlands

Parking is available at several locations around Resorts World Genting, including areas around SkyAvenue, Awana SkyCentral, Genting Highlands Premium Outlets and the hotels.

During weekends, school holidays and public holidays, allow extra time for parking and walking to your destination. If you are travelling with children, elderly passengers or several pieces of luggage, being dropped close to your destination can be more convenient than finding a parking space and walking through the resort.

Where to stay at Genting Highlands

Resorts World Genting has several hotels at different price points, from large family-oriented properties to more premium accommodation.

Staying overnight makes sense if you want to enjoy the resort after dark, visit more than one attraction or avoid travelling back to Kuala Lumpur late in the evening.

Hotel names, room availability and current accommodation options can change, so check the official Resorts World Genting website when making your reservation.

For a private transfer, an overnight trip can be arranged as a separate outbound and return journey, allowing you to choose your own hotel and return date.

Weather and what to pack for Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands is considerably cooler than Kuala Lumpur and the weather can change quickly. You may experience clear conditions, mist and rain during the same visit.

  • Light jacket or sweater — useful when temperatures feel cool, particularly in the evening.
  • Comfortable walking shoes — expect plenty of walking between hotels, attractions and shopping areas.
  • Rain protection — a compact umbrella or light rain jacket is useful.
  • Sun protection — sunglasses and sunscreen are still useful when the weather is clear.
  • Power bank — useful if you are spending several hours at the theme park.
  • Booking information — keep your hotel, attraction and transport details easily accessible.

Best time to visit Genting Highlands

Weekday mornings are generally easier if you want to avoid the busiest periods. Weekends, school holidays and public holidays can bring heavier traffic and larger crowds.

If Genting SkyWorlds is your main reason for visiting, starting earlier gives you more time to enjoy the park before moving on to other attractions.

Weather can also influence your plans. Mountain conditions can change quickly, so keep some flexibility in your itinerary rather than scheduling every attraction to the minute.

Example Genting Highlands day-trip itinerary

The following is only an example. Actual journey times and attraction timings depend on traffic, weather, queues and operating conditions.

  • 19:30–20:00 — Return to Kuala Lumpur, depending on traffic
Important: This is a sample itinerary rather than a fixed schedule. Allow additional time for queues, traffic, weather, attraction availability and cable-car operations, particularly during busy periods.

What should you book in advance?

If you already know your travel date, arranging transportation early is sensible, especially for weekends, school holidays and larger groups.

Larger vehicles such as Alphard, Vellfire, Hiace, Staria, Grand Starex and 14-seater vans can have more limited availability than standard vehicles.

For a Skylimo booking, the reservation is confirmed after payment. Driver and vehicle details are provided one day before the scheduled pickup.

You can check the available transfer options here .

Cancellation policy

  • 24 hours or more before the scheduled pickup: 100% refund.
  • Less than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup: no refund because the vehicle and driver have already been reserved and assigned.

For multi-day bookings, the 24-hour period is calculated from the pickup time on the first day of the booking.
